George Lucas: #1 A Difficult Journey

Here we are! Let's talk about Mr. George Lucas.

He was born on May 14th 1944 in Modesto, California. He is passionate by car races and later by photography. In June 1962, he has a very bad car accident and everybody think he is dead.

He wants to learn photography but has troubles to finance the studies. His Dad finally accepts to pay for filmmaking classes because George is accepted at USC. George Lucas meets Robert Dalva and... Walter Murch, both editors. His student films are mainly about freedom. At the screening of his Thesis film "THX 1138 4EB", many people are in the theater, included... Mr. Steven Spielberg.

Walter Murch and George Lucas are in competition to get an internship at the Warner Brothers. George Lucas gets the job and meets Francis Ford Coppola. They become friends and create a production company in San Francisco: American Zoetrope. The company needs to buy Post Production equipment. When they receive it, they need an editor to install and take care of that equipment. George Lucas calls... Walter Murch.

Then, George Lucas directs his first feature film. "THX 1138" with Robert Duvall as the main character. It's a longer version of his Thesis Film. George Lucas and his friend met at USC, John Millius start to work on a new script for the company. It's called "Apocalypse Now".

Second nomination for Stephen Mirrione after "Traffic" in 2000 (read post "Great Editors 5") and first one for Douglas Crise as best editors for their movie "Babel" with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The movie is nominated 7 times in total for the 2007 Oscars including Best Picture.

This is the third Academy Award nomination for Steven Rosenblum, "Blood Diamond". He was previously nominated for "Braveheart" in 1995 and "Glory" in 1989.

Alex Rodríguez and Alfonso Cuarón earned a nomination for best editing for the movie "Children Of Men" starring Clive Owen. First time for Alex Rodríguez but Alfonso Cuarón has been nominated before for his writing skills for "Y Tu Mama Tambien" in 2002.

Thelma Schoonmaker is the editor from "The Departed" directed by Martin Scorsese. She has already been nominated 5 times before. She has won 2 Oscars, for "The Aviator" (2004) and "Raging Bull" (1980) and was nominated for "Gangs Of New York" (2002), "Good Fellas" (1990) and "Woodstock" (1970).

The last nominees for the Oscar 2007 for best editing are the editors of the film "United 93". Clare Douglas, Christopher Rouse and Richard Pearson have never been nominated before.

Some news from the United States:

• We know which teams are going to play the Superbowl on February 4th. The Chicago Bears beat the New Orleans Saints Sunday morning. The Colts of Indianapolis was the second team who was qualified after its crazy game against the Patriots of New England.
• Hilary Clinton posted a video on her website saying that she is "in" for the 2008 election for the Presidency. Is she going to be the first woman President of United States ?
  
• The list of the nominated films for the Oscars has been published. Unfortunately, the Swiss film "Vitus" is not in competition anymore for the best Foreign language film.

More information will follow about the Superbowl beginning of February and I will publish the results of the Oscars after the ceremony which takes place in Hollywood on February 25th.

"Training Wheels" at IFFF

Good morning everybody,

This is a message to share good news about my film "Training Wheels".

As some of you know, it was picked up in the student film drama category at the International Family Film Festival and will be screened at the Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, across the street from Paramount on Melrose Avenue.

On the IFFF website, you can find the schedule of the whole festival and synopsis of each film as well.

I would love to see you in the Fairbanks Theater and show you a brand new version of the film: better sound, better colors and better shots. If you are interested, please, go on line and get tickets for only 10 dollars. "Training Wheels" is by letter 'T' at the bottom of the page.

This morning, I watched Rachael Ray, the most beautiful smile on American TV. After her guest Cybill Shepherd left, she cooked... a fondue with Swiss cheese, Gruyère and Emmentaler.

That looked just so good. But her show takes place in New York, so I couldn't try her fondue she did in the perfect Swiss tradition.

Good thing with this freezing weather we had in California within the last couple of days.

Ce matin, j'ai regardé Rachael Ray, le plus beau sourire de la TV américaine. Après que son invitée Cybill Shepherd soit partie, elle a cuisiné... une fondue avec du fromage suisse, Gruyère et Emmentaler.

Ca avait tout simplement l'air délicieux. Mais malheureusement, son show se tourne à New York, alors je ne pouvais pas tester sa fondue qu'elle a faite dans la plus pure tradition Suisse.

Très bonne chose avec ce froid qu'on a eu en Californie durant ces derniers jours.

Back to School

I hope you are all doing great.

On my side, I just had my second 3 hour editing class last night.

Our teacher's name is Timothy Greenwood and he teaches editing as good as Adam was teaching directing, maybe even better. This guy is passionate by editing and his knowledge is endless. He loves to teach and he is ready to go in detail with our class, because we are only 3 students.

I decided to take editing classes in April 2004, but I wanted to first learn English (2005) and then see how the whole film industry process works to know exactly what are the editor's tasks and responsibilities (2006).

Now, 3 years later, I'm finally there and you can't imagine how great it feels to go to school 3 times a week with Timothy. Everything is way better than anything I expected and working as an editor is a Dream Coming True.

J'espère que tout va bien pour vous.

De mon côté, j'ai juste eu mon deuxième cours de montage.

Notre prof s'appelle Timothy Greenwood et il nous enseigne le montage aussi bien qu'Adam nous enseignait la réalisation, peut-être même mieux. Il est passionné par le montage et ses connaissances sont sans limites. Il adore enseigner et est prêt à donner un cours très détaillés du fait qu'on est que 3 étudiants.

J'ai décidé de prendre des cours de montage en avril 2004, mais avant, je voulais apprendre l'anglais (2005) ainsi que le processus complet de l'industrie du film afin de connaître les tâches et les responsabilités précises du monteur (2006).

Aujourd'hui, 3 ans plus tard, j'y suis et vous pouvez pas vous imaginer à quel point j'adore aller à ces cours 3 fois par semaine avec Timothy. Tout est beaucoup mieux que ce que j'avais espéré et travailler en tant que monter est un rêve qui devient réalité.

Je vous souhaite à toutes et à tous une excellente jourée.

24 - Jack Bauer is back!

Does this mean anyting to you ? Yes, Jack Bauer is back on TV on FOX network.

After the Sunday 2 hour Premiere and the Monday special evening, we have already seen 4 hours of the day 6 in Jack Bauer's life. Kiefer Sutherland is... perfect as this crazy CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) agent who finished in a Chinese prison at the end of season 5.

DB Woodside, who I had the chance to meet last year, plays the president of the United States of America Wayne Palmer, and follows the example of his brother David Palmer who was killed in the season 5. He has to deal with terrorist attacks and one can see fear and power in his eyes at the same time. Thank you DB for the emotion you give us.

I don't want to say to much but Jack gets out of prison and gets back to work giving everything to his country and its President. The bad guys come from the Middle East and are performed by the actors in a way you can't even describe with words, you have to see it!

If you are on American soil, you can get the episodes on iTunes or Fox11. Enjoy the show! I guess for European audience, you will have to wait a couple of months.

Est-ce que ça vous dit quelque chose ? Eh oui, Jack Bauer est de retour sur FOX.

Après la Première de 2 heures dimanche soir et la soirée spéciale de lundi, on a déjà vu 4 heures du 6ème jour de la vie de Jack Bauer. Kiefer Sutherland est... parfait en tant que cet agent un peu fou du CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) qui a finit la saison 5 dans une prison chinoise.

DB Woodside que j'ai eu la chance de rencontrer l'année dernière, joue le Président des Etats-Unis d'Amérique Wayne Palmer et suit l'exemple de son frère David Palmer qui a été assassiné dans la saison 5. Il doit gérer des attaques terroristes et on peut voir le peur et le pouvoir dans ses yeux. Merci DB pour l'émotion transmise.

Je veux pas en dire trop, mais Jack sort de prison et retourne au travail en donnant tout à son pays ainsi qu'à son président. L'ennemi vient du Moyen-Orient et les acteurs sont tout simplement époustouflant dans leur rôle de terroristes. A voir!

Fifth editor I want to talk about: Stephen Mirrione.

He is the editor of the movie "Babel" which won a Golden Globe Award as the best drama motion picture.

Concerning awards, "Traffic", the film directed by Steven Soderbergh with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas won an "Oscar" for best editing. The editor was Stephen Mirrione.

Now, he is working on "Ocean's Thirteen", which means he also edited the previous ones. Do I need to remind you the cast of this film ? George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and many others. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, of course.

He cut "Good Night, And Good Luck" directed by Mr. Clooney as well as "21 Grams" with Sean Penn, Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Tonight January 15th 2007 took place the Annual Golden Globe Awards!

Best Motion pictures:
- "Babel" as the best drama
- "Dreamgirls" as the best musical

"Dreamgirls" has also the best supporting actress for Jennifer Hudson and best supporting actor for Eddie Murphy. "The Departed" won "only" the best director award for Martin Scorsese, nothing for Leonardo Di Caprio.

The best drama actress/actor are:
- Helen Mirren in "The Queen"
- Forrest Whitaker in "The Last King of Scotland"

Meryl Streep won the award of the best actress in a comedy for the excellent "The Devil wears Prada" and Sacha Cohen or "Borat", the award of the best actor in comedy. I haven't seen the movie yet, but he must have been very good to be better than Johnny Depp in "Pirates".

"The Queen" also won the best music award as well as the best screenplay. The TV show called "Elisabeth I" in which Helen Mirren also performs as the Queen of England won the best mini-serie or motion picture made for Television. She is the best actress, again. Jeremy Irons got the best supporting actor award, still for "Elisabeth I".

The best Television series Drama is NOT "24" but "Grey's Anatomy"

Uninvited

As promised, a few words about last weekend's shoot.

Great great great actors, they gave amazing performances through the whole weekend even though the weather was pretty cold and some scenes took place outside. Directions were given very precisely by the director who did a very good job.

The only thing was, as usual, we were running out of time at the end of the second day, which means that after a 13 hour first day, we had to go through a 17 hours day for the second one. It's not a lack of preproduction, they were ready on the producing side, on the directing side and on the acting side, that's just the way it is.

I had a lot of fun, met great people, so I can't wait to go back on set.

Comme promis, quelques mots sur le tournage du weekend passé.

Excellents acteurs qui ont délivré de fabuleuses performances à travers tout le week-end malgré une météo plutôt très fraiche et quelques scènes se tournant à l'extérieur. Les directions données par le réalisateurs étaient précises, elle a fait un très bon boulot.

Mais comme d'habitude, nous étions en retard et avons dû courir après le temps en fin de deuxième journée, ce qui veut dire qu'après une première journée de 13 heures, nous avons eu l'honneur de passer 17 heures sur le set. Ce n'était pas un problème de préproduction, ils étaient fin prêts au niveau de la production et de la réalisation ainsi qu'au niveau des acteurs. That's just the way it is.

C'était vraiment un tournage agréablie, rencontre avec des personnes adorables et hyper compétentes, je me réjouis déjà pour le prochain tournage.

Back on Set

Welcome to the second week of 2007.

In California, the weather is not bad but very windy. But it's not for the weather that you read my blog, right ?

I worked on a short film called "Our Lost Translation" written and directed by Michael. The script is amazing which means we had great actors on set. I was the sound mixer and the editor, as well. This film will be available on my website soon.

Next weekend, I will work as a sound mixer again on another short. Ajani will be the Director of Photography. I will write more about it after the shoot.

En Californie, la météo est plutôt bonne, quoiqu'un peu venteux. Mais la météo n'est pas la raison pourquoi vous lisez mon blog, juste ?

J'ai travaillé sur un court métrage, "Our Lost Translation" écrit et réalisé par by Michael. Le script est hallucinant ce qui veut dire que nous avions d'excellents acteurs devant la caméra. J'étais finallement le mixeur son ainsi que le monteur. Ce film sera disponible sur mon site web très prochainement.

Le week-end prochain, je vais à nouveau travailler en tant que mixeur son sur un autre court métrage. Ajani sera le directeur de la photographie. J'en écrirai plus après le tournage.

I am almost done with the color corrections and sound editing of my film "Training Wheels". The DVD needs to be sent before January 20th for the International Family Film Festival.

To work faster, I found a cover for the keyboard of my PowerBook G4 12". With this additional feature on my Mac, you'll edit more with the keyboard and much less with the mouse.
