The Oscars

Hello everyone,

As you know, yesterday, the Oscars took place in Los Angeles. We went to Hollywood but the access was pretty much impossible.

After a couple of weeks of "Great Editors", we know now who is the winner of the Oscar. "The Departed" won the Oscar for best editing (Thelma Shoonmaker), best directing (Martin Scorsese) and of course, best picture.

No surprise in the category of best actors. Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren got there gold little statuette as expected. It was a great evening hosted by the excellent and very funny Ellen DeGeneres.

Bonjour à tous,

Comme vous le savez, les Oscars ont eu lieu hier à Los Angeles. Nous y sommes allés mais l'accès était totalement inaccessible.

Après quelques semaines de "Great Editors", nous savons à présent qui a gagné l'Oscar. "The Departed" a gagné l'Oscar pour du meilleur montage (Thelma Shoonmaker), celui du meilleur réalisateur (Martin Scorsese) et bien sûr, meilleur film de l'année.

Pas de surprise dans la catégorie des meilleurs acteurs. Forest Whitaker et Helen Mirren sont repartis avec leur petite statuette dorée comme prévu. C'était une excellente soirée présentée par la très drôle Ellen DeGeneres.

Great Editors 8 - Clare Douglas, Christopher Rouse and Richard Pearson

A very special event tonight about the best editors of last year.

As you probably know, tomorrow, in Hollywood, take place the Oscars, or Academy Awards. The 3 editors Clare Douglas, Christopher Rouse and Richard Pearson are nominated for the editing of the movie "United 93".

Before their cooperation on this movie, Clare Douglas worked mostly for TV shows but also on "Bloody Sunday" directed by Paul Greengrass who also directed "United 93". Christopher Rouse edited "Anne Franck: The Whole Story", "The Bourne Identity" and "The Bourne Supremacy" and is currently working on the 3rd one, "The Bourne Ultimatum" starring Matt Damon. He also worked on "The Italian Job", "Paycheck" and "Eight Below". The most famous films that Richard Pearson worked on are also "The Bourne Supremacy" and "Men In Black II".

The last nominees are the editors of "Children Of Men" with Clive Owen. Alex Rodríguez and Alfonso Cuarón are very good directors/writers, but nothing special to say about their past in editing.

Un événement spécial ce soir au sujet des meilleurs monteurs de l'année dernière.

Comme vous le savez certainement, demain à Hollywood, ce sont les Oscars. Les 3 monteurs Clare Douglas, Christopher Rouse et Richard Pearson sont nominés pour le montage du film "United 93".

Avant cette coopération, Clare Douglas a travaillé principalement pour la télévision mais également sur "Bloody Sunday" réalisé par Paul Greengrass qui est également le réalisteur de "United 93". In a week, the Oscars will take place at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Our editor #7 is one of the nominees and her name is Thelma Schoonmaker. She is the editor of "The Departed" directed by Martin Scorsese with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg. Click here to read her interview before the Academy Awards.

Thelma Schoonmaker is the editor of Martin Scorsese and it's her 6th nomination:

That shows how important the relatioship between a director and his editor is. The director gives his "baby" to the editor to make the best out of it. Thelma and Martin met at the New York Film University.

She worked on other films like "Cape Fear" with Robert DeNiro, on "Kundun" and on the movie "Casino" starring again, Robert DeNiro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci and James Woods. She even worked with Michael Jackson on "Bad" (yes, it was directed by Martin Scorsese) and "Number Ones".

George Lucas: #2 One Magic Evening

Today, we'll talk about "American Graffiti".

George Lucas has a very hard time to find the budget for his new film about cruising. He finally gets the money from Universal. The studios give him 775'000 dollars, less than for his first film "THX1138" distributed by Warner Brothers.

But there was a catch: to get this money, he needs a big name. George Lucas explains that there could not be any big name, because it is a film about teenagers. So he calls his friend Francis Ford Coppola as a producer. The casting can start.

In the film, you recognize Ron Howard, Suzanne Sommers and of course... Harrison Ford who will work with Lucas a lot in the future as we will see in the future chapters. In Postproduction, Universal asks George Lucas to cut down 4,5 minutes to have it screened. What he does (not without any disappointment) with his editor, Verna Fields who also cut "Jaws" by Steven Spielberg.

The movie earns 118 million dollars for a 775'000 dollars budget. Lucasfilms is worth now 4 million dollars. George Lucas gets ready for "Starwars".

George Lucas a beaucoup de difficulté pour trouver le budget pour son nouveau film sur la drague automobile. Il obtient finalement l'argent d'Universal. Les studios lui donnent 775'000 dollars, soit moins que ce que Warner Brothers lui a donné pour son premier film "THX1138".

Mais il y a un "mais": pour avoir l'argent, on lui demande d'associer un grand nom au film. George Lucas explique qu'il n'est pas possible d'avoir un grand nom vu que c'est un film sur des adolescent. Il appelle Francis Ford Coppola en tant que producteur. Le casting peut enfin commencer.

Rocky: The Final Battle

A short post to let you know that I was sound mixer on a shoot last weekend. We shot "Rocky: The Final Battle" from Friday to Monday and it went very well.

I'll be the editor of this film. We'll start postproduction tomorrow in Tujunga. It's a comedy and the performances of the actors were just phenomenal!

Un court message pour vous informer que nous avons tourné un court métrage le weekend passé qui s'appelle "Rocky: The Final Battle". Le tournage a duré 4 jours, de vendredi a lundi et tout s'est très bien passé.

Je suis le monteur du film. Nous commencons la postproduction demain à Tujunga. C'est une comédie et les acteurs ont délivré d'exceptionnelles performances.

Great Editors 6 - Steven Rosenblum

Steven Rosenblum is one of the 5 editors nominated at the Oscars 2007. He edited the film "Blood Diamond" from Ed Zwick with LeonardoDi Caprio and Djimon Hountsou.

He's been nominted before in 1995 for the movie "Braveheart" starring Mel Gibson. He had been nominated earlier, in 1989 for the movie "Glory" directed by... Ed Zwick.

Last year, he was the editor of "Failure to Launch" with the lovely Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey. In 2005, he worked on "XXX: State Of The Union", in 2000 he edited "X-Men" starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Bryan Singer, "Pearl Harbor" in 2001, "Courage Under Fire" directed by... Ed Zwick with Meg Ryan in 1996, .

Before, he worked on "Legends Of The Fall" with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins and in 2003, he cut a fabulous film with Tom Cruise: "The Last Samurai", both films were directed by... Ed Zwick.

"Training Wheels" screened
