Since my editing class is over, I can tell you that the objectives of the American trip, which started in 2005 in San Francisco, have been achieved. Meet Walter Murch, being on IMDb and becoming a "best director" was not even a dream at that time, it was just impossible.

"First" by DB Woodside & Nick Sivakumaran

Yesterday, the movie I worked on in July 2006 was screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival. It's called "First" and was co-directed by DB Woodside and Nick Sivakumaran.

Nick was my cinematography teacher last year and DB Woodside is an actor currently playing President Wayne Palmer in the season 6 of the TV show "24" with Kiefer Sutherland. DB plays the main character (Mooney) in his film and I play the driver of his enemy Ilija, played amazingly by Michael Gabriel Goodfriend. It's a gorgeous short film, perfectly edited by Susan Munro. You'll see the superb Reiko Aylesworth also from "24".

We all spent the afternoon together in Newport Beach. Later, I went to the LAFCPUG meeting in Hollywood. Check out my new IMDB credits here and the website of the movie.

A small post about Alan Heim. He is the president of A.C.E, the "American Cinema Editors".
He cut films like "Alpha Dog", "The Last Mimzy", "Valmont" and "American History X".

The series about great editors won't be over before I talk about a young and very very good editor. His name is Robert Stambler and I worked with him at the AFI festival 2006. Keep his name in mind.

And I just wanted to let you know that next week, we'll be on vacation, so no posts but on Wednesday, the Final Cut Pro User Group will be in Las Vegas and so will I, to listen to the Master of Editing, Sir Walter Murch.

George Lucas: #5 Immaculate Reality

During this period (1989-1997) George Lucas produced many episode for a TV show called "The Young Indiana". It's about the past of the character Indiana Jones.

He also created the "George Lucas Educational Foundation". But one of the craziest thing a realized while I was reading this chapter, is that George Lucas actually created "Pixar" and sold it to Steve Jobs, the big boss of Apple. "Pixar" created a few very good animation films: "Toy Story 1+2", "A Bug's Life" and the very very good "Finding Nemo" in 2003.

His company ILM also worked on many famous projects during this period. "Terminator 2" and of course, the unbelievable "Jurassic Park" trilogy. With the creation of the dinosaurs, George Lucas realized that he could seriously think about the previous episodes of the existing Starwars trilogy.

After he received the Irving G. Thalberg Award from Steven Spielberg, George Lucas went back to work and made a new version of Starwars episode 4, 5 and 6 with new visual effects made by Industrial Light and Magic. The success was again, incredible. So he got back to his 20 year old notes and start writing "Starwars: The Beginning".

Il a egalement cree la "George Lucas Educational Foundation". Mais une des choses les plus incroyables que j'ai lue dans ce chapitre est que c'est en fait George Lucas qui a cree la societe "Pixar" et qui l'a vendu par la suite a Steve Jobs, le patron de Apple. "REIGN OVER ME"

We saw two films last night in Burbank.

The first one was the movie "300". It looks beautiful, the different camera angles are incredible and the slow motions are unbelievable. The picture and the sound editing is really really amazing (William How also edited "Fantastic Four", "I, Robot", "The Bone Collector"). But story wise, it's a little weak. It's about 300 Spartans who go to war against Persians. This is pretty much it. Enjoy the trailer at the end of this post.

The second movie, "Reign Over Me" is absolutely fabulous! A great great great story which shows the life of Dr. Johnson, played wonderfully by Don Cheadle ("Crash", "Hotel Rwanda"). He meets his college roommate, Charlie, in the street and wants to help him getting over his very difficult past.

Adam Sandler IS Charlie. His performance is mind blowing! He plays this man who lost his family in a plane crash and lives with his pane and does not want to talk about it. He lives in his own world and his college roommate is the only one who is invited in Charlie's world.

Adam Sandler's performance is as good as, or even better than Dustin Hoffman's performance in "Rain Man". This is definitely a MUST SEE MOVIE!

Hier, nous sommes allés voir deux films à Burbank.

Le premier était "300". L'image est superbe, les angles de caméras sont incroyables tout comme les ralentis. Le montage son et image est excellent (William How est également le monteur de "Fantastic Four", "I, Robot", "The Bone Collector"). Par contre, au niveau de l'histoire, c'est un peu faible. C'est au sujet de 300 Spartans qui vont à la guerre contre les Persians. C'est tout. Visionner la bande annonce ci-dessus.

Adam Sandler EST Charlie. Sa performance est complètement hallucinante! Il joue cet homme qui a perdu toute sa famille dans un accident d'avion et qui vit avec sa paine sans vouloir en parler à personne. Il vit dans son monde et la seule personne qui est invitée dans ce monde-là est son ancien roommate.

La performance d'Adam Sandler est aussi bonne, si ce n'est meilleure que la performance de Dustin Hoffman dans "Rain Man". C'est un film A VOIR ABSOLUMENT!

George Lucas: #4 Suspense

Hello everyone,

The chapter 4 of the book "The Cinema of George Lucas" is about the period between 1977 and 1989. During this period, George Lucas created many things like:

ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) which was created for the Starwars special effects
Sprocket Systems which was all about post production sound. It became Skywalker Sound later and won many awards (over 70) for best sound. In 1982, the sound THX was born out of this company.
The Star Tour is a ride at the Disney Theme Parks with R2-D2 and C-3PO

He also worked on films. George Lucas directed the "Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" as well as the "Episode VI: The Return Of The Jedi" which he also produced. With his friend Steven Spielberg, they created Indiana Smith who later became Indiana Jones. The name comes from George Lucas' dog: Indiana.

As you can see, the 4th film comes out in 2008. All the films are directed by Steven Spielberg. George Lucas is credited as an Executive Producer. They casted a great actor as that crazy archaeologist: Harrison Ford (remember, he is Ian Solo and also worked with Lucas on American Graffiti) and of course, Sean Connery played his Dad in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".

Finally, he produced "Willow". The movie was directed by an old friend of his: Ron Howard. At the same period, George Lucas bought the very famous Skywalker Ranch.

I will send the movie to another film festival which contacted me about 5 days ago. It takes place in San Rafael, North of San Francisco very close to the wine county.

Premonition

Good morning everyone,

We went to the movie theater recently and watched two very good movies:

the very funny "Wild Hogs" and
Sandra Bullock in "Premonition"

The cast of the first film is just unbelievable: John Travolta, Tim Allen, William H. Macy, Martin Lawrence and the crazy Ray Liotta in his role as a bad guy and big boss of a motorbiker team.

The story is about four friends who go on a bike tour with their wonderful Harley Davidson. It's a road trip that the character of John Travolta wants to go on to forget how miserable he is after he lost his wife and all his money. His three friends don't know about it yet and will discover it along the trip. Their journey is pretty nice and quiete until they meet Ray Liotta's character.

The second movie is definitely not funny. It's Sandra Bullok character's story. We meet her with her husband played by Julian McMahon in a flashback when they just bought a new house. Then, we enter her routine and boring life, probably 10 years later, and within the first 15 minutes, the police knocks at the door to tell her that her husband has had a bad car accident.

The problem is that one day, she wakes up and her husband is alive, and the next day, he is dead. Is she living a dream ? Is it reality ? Check out the movie, Sandra Bullock's performance is really totally incredible.

Nous sommes allés au cinéma récemment et avons vu deux très bons films:

le très drôle "Wild Hogs" et
Sandra Bullock dans "Premonition"

Le cast du premier film est simplement incroyable:: John Travolta, Tim Allen, William H. Macy, Martin Lawrence et le très dérangé Ray Liotta dans son rôle de méchant chef de bande d'un team de motards.

Le film raconte l'histoire de quatre amis qui partent pour un voyage à moto avec leur superbe Harley Davidson. C'est un roadtrip que le charactère de John Travolta organise afin d'oublier sa misérable vie après le départ de sa femme et après avoir perdu toute sa fortune. Ses trois amis n'en savent encore rien mais découvrent tout durant le voyage. Leur trip se passe relativement bien jusqu'au moment où ils rencontrent le personnage de Ray Liotta.

Le deuxième film est définitivement moins drôle. C'est l'histoire du personnage de Sandra Bullok. On la voit d'abord dans un flashback avec son mari joué par Julian McMahon lors de l'achat de leur nouvelle maison. On la retrouve environ une dizaine d'années plus tard dans sa routine. Dans les premières 15 minutes, la police vient lui annoncer la nouvelle du décès de son mari après un terrible accident de voiture.

Le problème et qu'un jour elle se réveille et son mari est vivant et le jour suivant, il est mort. Est-ce qu'elle vit un rêve ? Est-ce la réalité ? Allez voir le film, la performance de Sandra Bullock est tout simplement exceptionnelle.

The Oscars

Hello everyone,

As you know, yesterday, the Oscars took place in Los Angeles. We went to Hollywood but the access was pretty much impossible.

After a couple of weeks of "Great Editors", we know now who is the winner of the Oscar. "The Departed" won the Oscar for best editing (Thelma Shoonmaker), best directing (Martin Scorsese) and of course, best picture.

No surprise in the category of best actors. Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren got there gold little statuette as expected. It was a great evening hosted by the excellent and very funny Ellen DeGeneres.

Comme vous le savez, les Oscars ont eu lieu hier à Los Angeles. Nous y sommes allés mais l'accès était totalement inaccessible.

As you probably know, tomorrow, in Hollywood, take place the Oscars, or Academy Awards. The 3 editors Clare Douglas, Christopher Rouse and Richard Pearson are nominated for the editing of the movie "United 93".

Before their cooperation on this movie, Clare Douglas worked mostly for TV shows but also on "Bloody Sunday" directed by Paul Greengrass who also directed "United 93". Christopher Rouse edited "Anne Franck: The Whole Story", "The Bourne Identity" and "The Bourne Supremacy" and is currently working on the 3rd one, "The Bourne Ultimatum" starring Matt Damon. He also worked on "The Italian Job", "Paycheck" and "Eight Below". The most famous films that Richard Pearson worked on are also "The Bourne Supremacy" and "Men In Black II".

The last nominees are the editors of "Children Of Men" with Clive Owen. Alex Rodríguez and Alfonso Cuarón are very good directors/writers, but nothing special to say about their past in editing.

Our editor #7 is one of the nominees and her name is Thelma Schoonmaker. She is the editor of "The Departed" directed by Martin Scorsese with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg. Click here to read her interview before the Academy Awards.

George Lucas: #2 One Magic Evening

Today, we'll talk about "American Graffiti".

George Lucas has a very hard time to find the budget for his new film about cruising. He finally gets the money from Universal. The studios give him 775'000 dollars, less than for his first film "THX1138" distributed by Warner Brothers.

But there was a catch: to get this money, he needs a big name. George Lucas explains that there could not be any big name, because it is a film about teenagers. So he calls his friend Francis Ford Coppola as a producer. The casting can start.

In the film, you recognize Ron Howard, Suzanne Sommers and of course... Harrison Ford who will work with Lucas a lot in the future as we will see in the future chapters. In Postproduction, Universal asks George Lucas to cut down 4,5 minutes to have it screened. What he does (not without any disappointment) with his editor, Verna Fields who also cut "Jaws" by Steven Spielberg.

The movie earns 118 million dollars for a 775'000 dollars budget. Lucasfilms is worth now 4 million dollars. George Lucas gets ready for "Starwars".

A short post to let you know that I was sound mixer on a shoot last weekend. We shot "Rocky: The Final Battle" from Friday to Monday and it went very well.

I'll be the editor of this film. We'll start postproduction tomorrow in Tujunga. It's a comedy and the performances of the actors were just phenomenal!

Here we are! Let's talk about Mr. George Lucas.

He was born on May 14th 1944 in Modesto, California. He is passionate by car races and later by photography. In June 1962, he has a very bad car accident and everybody think he is dead.

He wants to learn photography but has troubles to finance the studies. His Dad finally accepts to pay for filmmaking classes because George is accepted at USC. George Lucas meets Robert Dalva and... Walter Murch, both editors. His student films are mainly about freedom. At the screening of his Thesis film "THX 1138 4EB", many people are in the theater, included... Mr. Steven Spielberg.

Walter Murch and George Lucas are in competition to get an internship at the Warner Brothers. George Lucas gets the job and meets Francis Ford Coppola. They become friends and create a production company in San Francisco: American Zoetrope. The company needs to buy Post Production equipment. When they receive it, they need an editor to install and take care of that equipment. George Lucas calls... Walter Murch.

Then, George Lucas directs his first feature film. "THX 1138" with Robert Duvall as the main character. It's a longer version of his Thesis Film. George Lucas and his friend met at USC, John Millius start to work on a new script for the company. It's called "Apocalypse Now".

We know which teams are going to play the Superbowl on February 4th. The Chicago Bears beat the New Orleans Saints Sunday morning. The Colts of Indianapolis was the second team who was qualified after its crazy game against the Patriots of New England.
Hilary Clinton posted a video on her website saying that she is "in" for the 2008 election for the Presidency. Is she going to be the first woman President of United States ?
The list of the nominated films for the Oscars has been published. Unfortunately, the Swiss film "Vitus" is not in competition anymore for the best Foreign language film.

More information will follow about the Superbowl beginning of February and I will publish the results of the Oscars after the ceremony which takes place in Hollywood on February 25th.

This is a message to share good news about my film "Training Wheels".

As some of you know, it was picked up in the student film drama category at the International Family Film Festival and will be screened at the Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, across the street from Paramount on Melrose Avenue.

On the IFFF website, you can find the schedule of the whole festival and synopsis of each film as well.

I would love to see you in the Fairbanks Theater and show you a brand new version of the film: better sound, better colors and better shots. If you are interested, please, go on line and get tickets for only 10 dollars. "Training Wheels" is by letter 'T' at the bottom of the page.

This morning, I watched Rachael Ray, the most beautiful smile on American TV. After her guest Cybill Shepherd left, she cooked... a fondue with Swiss cheese, Gruyère and Emmentaler.

That looked just so good. But her show takes place in New York, so I couldn't try her fondue she did in the perfect Swiss tradition.

Good thing with this freezing weather we had in California within the last couple of days.

Hi everyone,
I hope you are all doing great.

On my side, I just had my second 3 hour editing class last night.

Our teacher's name is Timothy Greenwood and he teaches editing as good as Adam was teaching directing, maybe even better. This guy is passionate by editing and his knowledge is endless. He loves to teach and he is ready to go in detail with our class, because we are only 3 students.

I decided to take editing classes in April 2004, but I wanted to first learn English (2005) and then see how the whole film industry process works to know exactly what are the editor's tasks and responsibilities (2006).

Now, 3 years later, I'm finally there and you can't imagine how great it feels to go to school 3 times a week with Timothy. Everything is way better than anything I expected and working as an editor is a Dream Coming True.

De mon côté, j'ai juste eu mon deuxième cours de montage.

Notre prof s'appelle Timothy Greenwood et il nous enseigne le montage aussi bien qu'Adam nous enseignait la réalisation, peut-être même mieux. Il est passionné par le montage et ses connaissances sont sans limites. Il adore enseigner et est prêt à donner un cours très détaillés du fait qu'on est que 3 étudiants.

J'ai décidé de prendre des cours de montage en avril 2004, mais avant, je voulais apprendre l'anglais (2005) ainsi que le processus complet de l'industrie du film afin de connaître les tâches et les responsabilités précises du monteur (2006).

Aujourd'hui, 3 ans plus tard, j'y suis et vous pouvez pas vous imaginer à quel point j'adore aller à ces cours 3 fois par semaine avec Timothy. Tout est beaucoup mieux que ce que j'avais espéré et travailler en tant que monter est un rêve qui devient réalité.

After the Sunday 2 hour Premiere and the Monday special evening, we have already seen 4 hours of the day 6 in Jack Bauer's life. Kiefer Sutherland is... perfect as this crazy CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) agent who finished in a Chinese prison at the end of season 5.

DB Woodside, who I had the chance to meet last year, plays the president of the United States of America Wayne Palmer, and follows the example of his brother David Palmer who was killed in the season 5. He has to deal with terrorist attacks and one can see fear and power in his eyes at the same time. Thank you DB for the emotion you give us.

I don't want to say to much but Jack gets out of prison and gets back to work giving everything to his country and its President. The bad guys come from the Middle East and are performed by the actors in a way you can't even describe with words, you have to see it!

If you are on American soil, you can get the episodes on iTunes or Fox11. Enjoy the show! I guess for European audience, you will have to wait a couple of months.

Est-ce que ça vous dit quelque chose ? Eh oui, Jack Bauer est de retour sur FOX.

Tonight January 15th 2007 took place the Annual Golden Globe Awards!

Best Motion pictures:
- "Babel" as the best drama
- "Dreamgirls" as the best musical

"Dreamgirls" has also the best supporting actress for Jennifer Hudson and best supporting actor for Eddie Murphy. "The Departed" won "only" the best director award for Martin Scorsese, nothing for Leonardo Di Caprio.

As promised, a few words about last weekend's shoot.

Great great great actors, they gave amazing performances through the whole weekend even though the weather was pretty cold and some scenes took place outside. Directions were given very precisely by the director who did a very good job.

The only thing was, as usual, we were running out of time at the end of the second day, which means that after a 13 hour first day, we had to go through a 17 hours day for the second one. It's not a lack of preproduction, they were ready on the producing side, on the directing side and on the acting side, that's just the way it is.

I had a lot of fun, met great people, so I can't wait to go back on set.

Comme promis, quelques mots sur le tournage du weekend passé.

Excellents acteurs qui ont délivré de fabuleuses performances à travers tout le week-end malgré une météo plutôt très fraiche et quelques scènes se tournant à l'extérieur. Les directions données par le réalisateurs étaient précises, elle a fait un très bon boulot.

Mais comme d'habitude, nous étions en retard et avons dû courir après le temps en fin de deuxième journée, ce qui veut dire qu'après une première journée de 13 heures, nous avons eu l'honneur de passer 17 heures sur le set. Ce n'était pas un problème de préproduction, ils étaient fin prêts au niveau de la production et de la réalisation ainsi qu'au niveau des acteurs. That's just the way it is.

C'était vraiment un tournage agréablie, rencontre avec des personnes adorables et hyper compétentes, je me réjouis déjà pour le prochain tournage.

Welcome to the second week of 2007.

In California, the weather is not bad but very windy. But it's not for the weather that you read my blog, right ?

I worked on a short film called "Our Lost Translation" written and directed by Michael. The script is amazing which means we had great actors on set. I was the sound mixer and the editor, as well. This film will be available on my website soon.

Next weekend, I will work as a sound mixer again on another short. Ajani will be the Director of Photography. I will write more about it after the shoot.

Clay Regazzoni, one of the best Swiss pilot ever died on an Italian freeway on December 16th.

He was with the Ferrari team for a very long time and won 5 Grand Prix in his Formula 1 career. One year, he was even vice-championship. After a very bad accident in 1980 in California, he became paraplegic but kept racing. He then became famous for his workshops about road safety.

Thank you for the energy you gave to Swiss people and people in wheelchairs.

Shoot canceled

Hi everyone,

After 5 crazy days, the shoot of the feature film "Sisters In Spirit" was canceled. That means that I will probably not get my first IMDb credits through this movie. The plan is to reshoot the whole film in January because the Executive Producers were not happy with the dailies.

No comments from the Executive Producers about my rough cuts, so no idea if they liked it or not. The director was pretty happy with it so, no worries.

Après 5 jours fous, les producteurs exécutifs ont annulé le tournage du long métrage "Sisters In Spirit". Ca veut dire que je n'aurai probablement pas mes premier crédits sur IMDb au travers de ce film. Le plan et de retourner tout le film en janvier parce que les producteurs exécutifs n'aimaient pas les dailies.

Pas de commentaires des producteurs exécutifs au sujet de mes premiers montages, donc aucune idée s'ils aimaint ou pas. Le réalisateur en était plutôt content.

Here is the 4th post about "great editors".

Today, we are going to talk about Stuart Baird. He was born in 1947 in England, he also is a producer and a director, his name is mainly associated with action movies. He worked many years with Richard Donner.

Together, they did films like "Lethal Weapon" and "Lethal Weapon II" with Mel Gibson. Before, in 1978, Christopher Reeve became "Superman" hired by Richard Donner. Stuart Baird edited the film. "Maverik" is also part of both resumes.

Stuart Baird worked on "Demolition Man" with Sylvester Stallone ("Rocky Balboa" is coming up in December), "Mission Impossible II" and "Lara Croft: Tomb Rider" with the sexy Angelina Jolie, as well.

He has recently collaborated on 2 projects with Martin Campbell. The first one is the sequel "The Legend of Zorro" and the last movie they worked on is the amazing "Casino Royale", the 21st James Bond film.

He was the brother of JFK, he also was the Senator of New York and won the Presidential Primary in the State of California in 1968. Robert Francis Kennedy was shot after his press conference, in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

The new film "Bobby" written and directed by Emilio Estevez, is unbelievable. The audience feels many emotions watching it. You will laugh, cry, you'll be shocked and during the end credits, you will read the names of the cast and you will not believe what you have just seen. It is about random people who were in the Ambassador hotel that day of June 1968. It starts at the beginning of the day and ends with the assassination of the Senator.

Emilio Estevez plays the husband of that famous singer who performs her show in the hotel. She is played by Demi Moore. Ashton Kutcher is very funny as a drug dealer, the character of Sharon Stone is a hairdresser at the Ambassador married to William H. Macy (who is cheating on her with Heather Graham). Christian Slater is the kitchen manager, Laurence Fishburne works for him as a cook. Elijah Wood and Lindsay Lohan want to get married so he does not need to go to Vietnam, Helen Hunt is a very depressive woman married to Martin Sheen who tries to help her. Joshua Jackson is a very good RFK staff member and finally, Anthony Hopkins is just phenomenal!

At one point in the movie, Demi Moore's character goes to the hairdresser. She is actually a very lonely and drunk star. She talks to Sharon Stone. The 2 characters understand each other and that scene is brought by the 2 performances at the best level I have ever seen. You can just not blink with your eyes.

The editor, Richard Chew, did a fabulous job with the actual footage from the past and the new one. He cuts back and forth and is able to keep the emotion at its top during the famous last press conference of Robert Francis Kennedy. He uses the song "The Sound Of Silence" performed by Simon and Garfunkel on images which do not need any word to bring tears in your eyes.

Only one thing to add: Go and watch it, you cannot miss that movie.

Ashton Kutcher est un dealer de drogue relativement drôle, le personnage de Sharon Stone est une coiffeuse à l'Ambassador mariée à William H. Macy (qui la trompe avec Heather Graham). Christian Slater est le superviseur en cuisine, Laurence Fishburne travaille pour lui en tant que cuisinier. Elijah Wood et Lindsay Lohan veulent se marier afin de lui éviter le Vietnam, Helen Hunt est une femme très dépressive mariée avec Martin Sheen qui essaie de l'aider. Joshua Jackson est un très bon membre du staff de RFK et finallement, Anthony Hopkins est tout simplement grandiose!

Dans une scène du film, le personnage de Demi Moore se rend chez le coiffeur. Elle est en fait très seule et alcoolique. Elle en discute avec Sharon Stone. Les 2 personnages se comprennent et cette scène est amenée à un niveau de performance par les deux femmes que je n'ai jamais vu auparavant. Il n'est simplement pas possible de cligner des yeux.

Le monteur, Richard Chew, a fait un travail fabuleux avec les images du passé et le film. Il coupe de l'un à l'autre et garde ainsi l'émotion au maximum durant la fameuse dernière conférence de presse de Robert Francis Kennedy. Il utilise la chanson "The Sound Of Silence" de Simon and Garfunkel sur des images qui n'ont pas besoin de mots pour vous faire monter les larmes aux yeux.

Une dernière chose: Allez voir le film, il ne faut pas le manquer.

Casino Royale - Daniel Craig as James Bond

Daniel Craig has blue eyes, he is blond. What a shock for a James Bond fan! How is he going to be able to replace the fabulous Pierce Brosnan as agent 007.

The movie starts with a very good introduction from Martin Campbell, the director. The image is dark and the lighting unbelievable. Daniel Craig is almost only a shadow for now. The editor cuts back and forth to a previous scene in James Bond's life. Surprising but it makes you jump into the movie right away.

First stunt scene is crazy. James Bond is running after a "bad guy". No plane, no unbelievable stunt, just a great scene, fabulous cuts and very good camera work. As an audience, one knows immediatly that we go back to the James Bond character created by Ian Flemming. James Bond is not a nice guy, he has a license to kill and uses it.

The two James Bond girls are beautiful. The body of Caterina Morina looks gorgeous in her amazing red dress. She plays the wife of the French actor Simon Abkarian, Solange. Eva Green, the second James Bond girl, is a strong character. She is not an easy girl like 007 is used to. She plays the accountant hired by M (the very good Judi Dench) to check what James is going to do with the money. 007 needs that money to play pocker against "Le Chiffre" played wonderfully by Mads Mikkelsen.

The Pocker game looks good, so do all the actors around the table. Also very good editor's job. It's a long scene and never boring. Congratulations Mr Stuart Baird. There is even a Swiss actor in this scene. Carlos Leal, the singer of the very famous ex-band named "Sens Unik" plays the host of the poker game. He comes from Renens, the town where I grew up. Congratulations to you too Carlos.

Daniel Craig also likes Martini shaken, not stired even if sometimes he doesn't care and the British cars Aston Martin. And be careful, the most famous sentence of the movie is not where it is usually. Just go and watch it, it's one of the best Bond ever.

Thank you Mr Martin Campbell for that great movie.

Daniel Craig a des yeux bleus, il est blond. Quel choc pour un fan de James Bond! Comment va-t-il pouvoir remplacer le fabuleux Pierce Brosnan en tant qu'agent 007.

Le film commence avec une très bonne introduction offerte par Martin Campbell, le réalisateur. L'image est foncée, l'éclairage incroyable. Daniel Craig est pour le moment juste une ombre. Le monteur coupe de cette scène à une autre dans le passé de James Bond. Ca surprend, mais vous êtes tout de suite dans le film.

Première cascade, complètement fou. James Bond court après le "méchant". Pas d'avion, pas de cascade impossible, juste une très très bonne scène, fabuleux montage et très bon travail à la caméra. En tant qu'audience, on sait immédiatement qu'on retrouve le James Bond créé par Ian Flemming. James Bond n'est pas un homme agréable, il a un permis de tuer et l'utilise.

Les deux James Bond girls sont superbes. Le corp de Caterina Morina est superbe dans sa magnifique robe rouge. Elle joue la femme de l'actor français Simon Abkarian, Solange. Eva Green, la deuxième James Bond girl est un personnage très fort. Ce n'est pas une fille facile auxquelles 007 est habitué. Elle joue le comptable engagé par M (l'excellente Judi Dench) pour contrôler ce que James va faire avec l'argent. 007 a besoin de cette argent pour jouer au pocker contre "Le Chiffre" joué magnifiquement par Mads Mikkelsen.

La scène du Pocker est une très bonne scène, tout comme les acteurs autour de la table. Egalement excellent travail du monteur. C'est une très longue scène, mais jamais ennuyeuse. Félicitations Mr Stuart Baird. Il y a même un acteur suisse dans cette scène. Carlos Leal, le chanteur de l'ex-groupe très connu, "Sens Unik" joue l'animateur du jeu. Il vient de Renens, la ville où j'ai grandi. Salutations à toi également Carlos.

Daniel Craig aime également les Martinis, au shaker et pas à la cuillère même si parfois il s'en fiche ainsi que les voitures britanniques Aston Martin. Et attention, la phrase la plus connue du film n'est pas où elle est d'habitude. Allez voir le film, c'est un des tout meilleurs Bond.

Visit of the Family

Good morning everyone,
I'm sorry, it's been a while I haven't posted anything.

My family came to California to visit me and my girlfriend. We went to many different places in Los Angeles, from Hollywood to Venice Beach. They went to San Francisco without me (I was working at the AFI Festival) and I joined them in Las Vegas for the end of their tour.

We visited Zion Park, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Seligman, Santa Barbara and Malibu to end the trip on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. We all had a great time.

Public Transportation in L.A.

I might say something what will surprise you.
- public transportation is not that bad in Los Angeles!

As you know, I worked in Hollywood for the AFI Festival a couple of days and I had to take the bus. If you don't need to change buses, you're fine. 40 minutes by bus from Burbank Airport to Hollywood for only 1.25 dollars.

Be sure to check out the schedule of your bus and you'll be fine.

Here is the 3rd post about our great editors. After Walter Murch and Pietro Scalia, let's talk about Michael Kahn.

First of all, he is the official editor of Steven Spielberg. That's the reason why he cut "Munich" about events which took place in 1976 with Eric Bana, "War of The Worlds" and "Minority Report" with Tom Cruise, "The Terminal" with Tom Hanks and Catherine Zetta-Jones and "Catch Me if You Can" with again, Tom Hanks and Leonardo Di Caprio.

He won three Academy Award for:

- in 1981, "Raiders of The Lost Ark" with Harrison Ford
- in 1993, "Schindler's List", with Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes
- in 1998, "Saving Private Ryan" with Tom Hanks and Matt Damon

He seems to be one of the last editors cutting on film and not digitally, at least on the projects directed by Steven Spielberg.

Halloween in the United States is huge. Many houses are decorated.

We had a very nice time at the Red Rock Cafe on Sunset Boulevard. Feel free to check out some additional pictures on Fabienne's blog.

There was also a crazy party on Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood. We didn't go but it sounded a lot of fun on TV and everybody was wearing costumes.

AFI FEST Presented by Audi

The AFI Film Festival will take place in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard at the Arclight Theater from November 1st until the 12th.

I applied as a volunteer editor and will be cutting footage from different events which will happen during the festival. The postproduction office is already in place on Hollywood Boulevard.

Swiss Friends - Next

Our friend working for Danone came visit us before a meeting in Mexico. It was a nice surprise and his car was fabulous: Ford Mustang.

We spent the end of last week with our friends who came back from their huge tour in California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.

Like 2 weeks ago, we went to the beaches in Venice and Santa Monica. Before the Pacific Ocean, we went to the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley.

The Thrid Street Promenade at night is a great place to be.

Next Swiss visits in about 10 days.

Great Editors 2 - Pietro Scalia

Welcome to the second episode about great editors.

Pietro Scalia, as you probably know, is the editor of fabulous movies like "Memoirs Of A Geisha", "Hannibal" from Ridley Scott or "G.I. Jane" with Demi Moore.

He is also a big fan of Oliver Stone and he had the oportunity to work with him on many different films. Pietro Scalia worked as an assistant editor on "Wall Street" with Charlie Sheen and as an associate editor on "Born On The Forth Of July" starring Tom Cruise.

After 5 years working with Oliver Stone, Pietro Scalia was asked to fully edit the movie "JFK". He was honored by an Academy Award for film editing. He earned two other Academy Award Nominations, in 1997 for "Good Will Hunting" and in 2000 for "Gladiator" with Russell Crowe.

Now, what you might not know, is that Pietro Scalia went to UCLA and graduated in 1985. He was born in 1960 in Italy and raised in Switzerland. He went to the Swiss German school and decided to go to the United States after his graduation from high school.

Four Swiss friends arrived last weekend. We spent the whole weekend with 2 of them while the 2 others were driving around in California.

Our 2 L.A. tourists visited Hollywood, Venice Beach, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills. Then, they spent one day at Universal Studios. At this time, they left for a tour in a couple of national parks.

They are all coming back to Los Angeles in about 10 days.

"First" - Post Production

As you might remember, I worked on a set with one of my teacher. Nick, the teacher, was co-directing a film with DB Woodside. DB and Reiko Aylesworth were the main actors.

Last Friday, I went to the editor who is cutting their movie. She works on Avid and her office is pretty cool. Many screens and very powerful computers.

Monster's Ball by Marc Forster

We watched the movie "Monster's Ball" directed by Marc Forster. Halle Berry got an oscar for her performance as "Leticia", a woman whose husband is in prison and is executed.

The atmosphere of the film is very dark. One can feel it through the speed of the cuts and the music. It is really heavy. Billy Bob Thornton and Heath Ledger's performances bring also a lot to the movie.

Great great great movie directed by the Swiss director. Congratulations, Sir.
Hope to meet you one day in Hollywood.

On a regardé le film "Monster's Ball" réaslisé par Marc Forster. Halle Berry a reçu un oscar pour sa performance en tant que Leticia, une femme dont le mari est en prison et se fait executer.

L'athmosphère du films est très lourde. On peut le sentir au travers du montage relativement lent et par la musique. Les performances de Billy Bob Thornton et Heath Ledger amène également énormément au film.

Great Editors 1 - Walter Murch

Within the next months, I'm going to give you names of great editors.

Let's start by the most famous one. His name is Walter Murch. I have written about him in my previous post "What is Editing ?". He is the editor who loves technology.

He edited the 2 first feature films of Georges Lucas, "THX1138" and "American Graffiti". He was sound editor on "Apocalypse Now" and picture and sound editor on the recut ("Apocalypse Now Redux"). He even created an editing machine.

Recently, he edited "The English Patient" with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes on AVID and "Cold Mountain" with Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zelwegger on Final Cut Pro.

"Cold Moutain" is the first feature film ever which was edited on Final Cut Pro. There is a book written by Charles Koppelman, called "Behind the Seen" about this experience.

There is another book, written by Walter Murch, called "In The Blink Of An Eye" which everybody who wants to be an editor or filmmaker should read. Great and very interesting book!

Il a monté les 2 premiers long métrages de Georges Lucas, "THX 1138" et "American Graffiti". Il était le monteur son sur "Apocalypse Now" et le monteur image et son sur la dernière version ("Apocalypse Now Redux"). Il a même créé une machine de montage.

Récemment, il a monté "Le Patient Anglais" avec Juliette Binoche et Ralph Fiennes sur AVID puis "Cold Moutain" avec Jude Law, Nicole Kidman et Renée Zelwegger sur Final Cut Pro.

"Cold Moutain" est le tout premier long métrage monté sur Final Cut Pro. Il existe un livre écrits par Charles Koppelman, le titre est "Behind the Seen" au sujet de cette expérience.

Il y aussi un autre livre, écrit par Walter Murch dont le titre est "In The Blink Of An Eye" que toute personne voulant devenir un monteur ou un filmmaker devrait lire. Très bon livre et très intéressant!

Some words about my unofficial birthday weekend.

On Friday, we were invited by Vincent Gillioz to the screening of a movie called "Pray For Morning" edited by Joel Bender. Andrea Zonder, the assistant editor is German and was born in Zurich, Switzerland. The music composed by Vincent was just fabulous. The story is about a group of teenagers being trapped in an old abandoned hotel. Great film! The screening and the party afterwards took place at the Raleigh Studios on Melrose Ave in front of Paramount.

Saturday, I worked on Ajani Fida's thesis film called "Spiral". I am one of his editors preparing the film for festivals. At around 11pm we went to the "Viper Room", it's a very famous bar on Sunset Boulevard. One of the owner is Johnny Depp. Nicole, one of the actress of "Going Nowhere Fast" performed with the "Pink-a-Boos". Great show!

We relaxed a little on Sunday and went to the restaurant "Cast Away" for my birthday. We had a brunch "au champagne" in the hills of Burbank. The weather was not great so the view wasn't either. But we could see downtown L.A. and downtown Burbank, it was beautiful. Check the pictures by clicking on the link on the right called "My pictures".

Voici quelques mots sur mon weekend d'anniversaire officieux.

La météo n'était pas superbe, donc la vue non plus. Mais on pouvait voir le centre ville de L.A. et celui de Burbank, c'était magnifique. What is Editing ?

Today, some words about film editing. I invite you to read this great article on the encyclopedia called Wikipedia You will read some things you already know about and plenty of new stuff.

For exemple, Edward Dmytryk who was a great editor in the 40's, 50's and 60's, explains 7 rules of cutting:

* 1. Never make a cut without a positive reason.
* 2. When undecided about the exact frame to cut on, cut long rather than short.
* 3. Whenever possible cut 'in movement'.
* 4. The 'fresh' is preferable to the 'stale'.
* 5. All scenes should begin and end with continuing action.
* 6. Cut for proper values rather than proper 'matches'.
* 7. Substance first—then form.

Another editor, Walter Murch says there are 6 main criterias in editing:
(in order of importance)

* emotion
* story
* rhythm
* eye trace
* two-dimensional place of the screen
* three-dimensional space of action

Aujourd'hui, quelques mots sur le montage. Je vous invite à lire un très bon article sur l'encyclopédie Wikipedia. Vous allez lire des informations que vous savez déjà et d'autres notions totalement nouvelles.

Par exemple, sur la version anglaise uniquement, Edward Dmytryk, qui était un excellent monteur dans les années 40, 50 et 60 expliquent 7 règle de découpage:

* 1. Ne jamais couper sans une bonne raison.
* 2. Quand on est pas sûr sur quelle image précise il faut couper, il est mieux de couper un peu plus tard que trop tôt.
* 3. Quand c'est possible, couper sur un mouvement.
* 4. Le frais est préférable au dépassé.
* 5. Toute scène devrait commencer et se finir sur une action continue.
* 6. Couper pour de bonnes raisons plutôt que pour un match.
* 7. L'important d'abord, la forme, ensuite.

Un autre monteur, Walter Murch parle de 6 critères principaux en montage: (dans l'ordre d'importance)

* émotion
* histoire
* rhythme
* où l'oeil regarde
* l'espace 2 dimensions sur l'écran
* l'espace tri-dimentionnel de l'action
